RE: Road North From Steamboat Lake, CO to Rt 70

Now that I look at FR 550 on my maps, I see it does run up to WY 70 approx 12 miles west of Riverside and WY 230. Maybe there is a loop I can take from Hahns Peak up FR 550, west on WY 70, & then back down CR 129 ? Anybody out there know for sure ?

RE: Road North From Steamboat Lake, CO to Rt 70

Thx,Summutt - As you pointed out, I was referring to WY 70 when I wrote Rt-70. Steamboat Lake is one of Colorado's nicest State Parks. Been some years since I was there, and I think I'll go up this summer and poke around the back roads. With my GPS it won't matter so much what the FR and CR signs say, even though my maps do show it is CR-129 that winds up to the WY border and then west to WY-70 near Slater, WY.

How is that road during the Summer and Fall ? Passable with a 4WD Pickup ? I think it is designated CR-129. Thx,

RE: 2008 Jayco 31.5 FBHS Weight

The first weight limit violated is usually the GVWR of the truck. (You said GCWR but then talked of pin weight, so I think you meant to type GVWR.) I suspect most single rear wheel pickups with average size 5th wheels are exceeding their GVWRs. My trailer is small, but if I ever go to a larger 5th whl I suspect my GVWR will be exceeed PDQ. I think a more serious consideration is the maximum weight rating for the rear axle of the truck, the GAWR Rear. This will typically permit more pin weight. It is the limit I plan NOT to exceed.

RE: McHood City Park , Winslow. AZ

At this link _ http://www.nps.gov/pefo/planyourvisit/camping.htm I found this. "Outside the south entrance of the park, at the junction of the park road and Highway 180, two privately owned gift shops allow overnight parking in their parking lots." It is easy to tow a trailer inside the park. I did it myslf some years ago. This option might save you from leaving your rig unprotected in a remote location.

RE: Newbie - good choices for new 5er

Irv - What made you eliminate bumper pull (BP) trailers in favor of 5th wheels ? Sounds like you may be parked and living in your rig more than travelng around in it, and BPs can be easier to live in due to their basic box shape. Plus some of the hitches available for BPs make them as stable to tow as 5th wheels (or so I am told). You gain some 5 ft in length, but get a reduction in height and wind resistance when towing. I'm asking as much as suggesting because I'm wondering what I might go to in my next rig. The Jayco brand is a good one, 5th whl or BP. Some friends of mine just bought a Jayco BP even though they have a truck like mine and could have gone with a fiver. A BP let them put a cap on the truck bed and gain that storage space. I understand that a washer/dryer isn't too useful if you wear a lot of different clothes. Works best if you just cycle between two sets of jeans and sweat shirts (or something similar), or so I understand. Others may have different opinions. And yes, I do like my Northwoods Nash.

RE: West to east circle timing

From Wikipedia: "The peak season for tornado activity is from March to May in the Southern United States, while activity shifts northward to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions in the summer months from June to August." So you see that staying in good climates zones for RVing will necessarily put you in areas of tornado activity. Not to worry though...never more than 100 people killed by tornadoes in any one year. This is not good, of course, but more than that are killed EVERY DAY in traffic accidents. One piece of luck >>> Traveling in good climate zones for RVing will keep you away from hurricanes.

RE: Carlsbad NM to Pecos TX along Rt 285

I appreciate the reinforcement about Brantley SP - I have seen it recommended before - but The Texan is right...I'm focused on the road South from Carlsbad. My Plan A (when did I last stick with a Plan A ?? ;) ) is to ON (Over Night) at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, ON at Guadalupe Natl Pk Pine Springs Parking Lot, visit Carlsbad Caverns, then ON somewhere along 285 before headin on down to Davis Mtn St Pk. When I'm paying little to nothing for campsites, I don't go far each day. EasyDoesIt... :Z

RE: WHY do you boondock .... vs staying at a CG ?

Here in the West, one of the easiest and most reliable ways to find a good boondocking place is to pull into a convenient Forest Service Ranger Station and ask if there is any *disbursed camping* nearby. The staff are generally very helpful and generous with their knowledge. The Forest Service offices are usually on *the* main road with a distictive sign out front. Really works..believe me...I've done this many times in States to the S, N and W of Colorado, and have been able to stay in some beautiful places that I would probably never have found on my own. An added benefit is that you know you are legal and not trespassing on private property.

RE: What size catalytic heater?

There was quite a bit of good info about heater sizing in this previous post: Questions about the Olympian Wave 3 LP Heater I used an Olympic Wave 6 in my small 25 ft single slide 5th wheel and it put out too much heat even at low setting. Had to downsize to a Wave 3 which works just fine. My usage is in relatively mild cold weater conditions.

RE: New Mexico welcome centre

Ah Yes...that helped. Actually MM 163 since it is across the border in New Mexico. Not being anal...just need precise location info since I do my own navigating as I drive along. I've found that map reading and road watching can be mutully exclusive, and potentially fatal. :) Thx

RE: New Mexico welcome centre

Could someone locate this Visitor Center/Rest Area a little more precisely ? Perhaps by MM or nearest cross road ? The only one I can find on my maps is at MM 50 near Fabens, which is east, not west, of El Paso. Thx,

RE: Walmart stays

Good topic. We're heading out to WalMart for a couple days this weekend. Taking the quads and a couple dirt bikes, they're not much fun on WalMarts blacktop but there is some open land out back of WM where we can get the speed up. Our only worry is I hope we dont get bothered much by Christmas shoppers wanting to sit around the campfire with us and eat all our smores. Good one Bushy. Looks like you got one bite so far. :)
